The Rescue of Ruby

When I was working as an intern at the Animal Medical Center in New York City prior to joining CUVS, a 4-month old puppy, Ruby, was presented to me in severe hypovolemic shock probably from severe intestinal parasitism which was causing vomiting and diarrhea. She also had other conditions including being blind in her left eye, likely from a previous corneal ulcer rupture (possibly resulting from some type of trauma to the eye during birth). Due to financial concerns, the owner was going to put her to sleep but, ultimately, couldn't make the decision and, instead, abandoned her at the hospital. We treated Ruby and she made a full recovery. She ended up having to spend a month in the hospital while we waited to hear from the owners to see if she was truly abandoned. During that time, I would take her for walks and spend time with her and I fell in love. Eventually, I decided to take her home with me! Ruby moved with me to CT when I got my job here in the emergency service at CUVS and she has done great. She is now 13 months old and loves hiking and playing with other dogs. She lives with one cat, George, and two gerbils, Ollie and Willie.
